Antigua. Guatemala and lake Atitlan are among the most beautiful places in the world. NOT dangerous!
Guatemala is one of the greatest place on earth and a perfect vacation.
Beautiful landscapes, volcanoes with here and there some small eruptions.
Good shopping…a real souk! Mostly material.
-smiling people but most very poor…like India
- memorable food in Antigua ( mostly French or Italian chefs) at new york prices
- special inns, b+b mostly in Antigua and lake atitlan with great service and decoration.
We only went to Antigua ( colonial city with surrounded by volcanoes) stayed at 2 differents places but casa Encantada www.casaencantada-antigua.com or panza verde we loved. Eat at Tartines!
- We also stayed at lake Atitlan at great small hotel: san Buenaventura de atitlan. What a view! What a magic place
- We did meet interesting people…so many dutch?!!!!!!hang out for a few days with a couple from Belgium who leave in Mexico but of course it’s just not anybody who travels to Guatemala
- Also went to Chichicastenango for the market but stayed overnight ( 2) would not recommend…cold and depressing. Market in Antigua is much more fun!
- Very impressed with transportation. You can go anywhere with mini van including Belize, Honduras, Mexico. They pick you up at your hotel and drop you at the hotel of your choice the other side…for less then $20 for 200 km!

Guatemala is one of those countries that is special..like Burma, laos, Peru..there is something to the experience that is VERY different than places like the rest of central America.
